The World Health Organization (WHO) African Region has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the organization’s strategic priorities, including efforts to establish sustainable financing mechanisms amid ongoing reforms without compromising WHO’s cohesion and core mission.
Tanzania’s Minister of Health, Jenista Mhagama, delivered this message today, May 19, 2025, as she presented the African Region’s statement on behalf of 47 member states during a review session.
The statement is expected to be formally submitted at the WHO General Assembly following the address by WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
“The African Region deeply values the continued support of the World Health Organization in strengthening health systems, combating infectious diseases, advancing universal health coverage, and effectively responding to disease outbreaks such as Marburg, MPOX, and cholera,” said Minister Mhagama.
She also applauded Dr. Tedros and his team for their strong leadership in advancing global health systems, including notable progress in Tanzania’s own fight against disease outbreaks.
During the Assembly, Minister Mhagama expressed gratitude to her fellow Health Ministers from the 47 countries in the African Region for electing Tanzania to the position of WHO Regional Director for Africa a role now held by Professor Mohammed Yakub Janabi.
