Two women from Mbeya City are in police custody after being found with 320 kilograms of marijuana.
On May 21, 2025, Mbeya Regional Police Commander Benjamin Kuzaga addressed the matter, identifying the suspects as Seva Simwinga (29) and Sara Simwinga (35), both businesswomen from Mponja, Uyole, in Mbeya City.
Commander Kuzaga confirmed that the women were arrested during a special operation conducted by the Mbeya Police on the night of May 21, 2025, in Mponja Street, located in Uyole Ward, Iyunga Division, Mbeya. During the operation, the police discovered four sacks and four boxes containing the illegal drugs, which were concealed inside the women's residence.
In a separate operation, the police also arrested Billy Mtafya (19), a mechanic from Uyole, and Joseph Nyalusi (25), a bus conductor from Dodoma, for possessing 30 kilograms of marijuana.
The two men were arrested between May 19 and 20, 2025, at around 8 PM at a police checkpoint located on the main road between Mbeya and Njombe, in Mbarali District. They were caught transporting the drugs, packed in four bags and one box wrapped in nylon, as cargo aboard two passenger buses. The buses, with registration numbers T.683 ELK (Yutong), owned by ABC Upper Class, and T.385 EEU (Yutong), owned by Shabiby Class, were traveling from Mbeya to Dar es Salaam.
Commander Kuzaga emphasized that the Mbeya Regional Police is committed to eradicating the illegal drug trade and is urging individuals involved in such activities to cease immediately, as there is no place for drug-related crimes in society. The police are actively working to identify and apprehend those engaged in the trafficking of illegal substances. Additionally, the Mbeya Police are encouraging the public to report any criminal activities or suspects to help ensure that offenders are brought to justice.
