On May 20, 2025, the Government of Kenya, through its spokesperson Isaac Mwaura, emphasized the importance of respecting the sovereignty of neighboring countries, particularly Tanzania. Mwaura stated, "Tanzania, as a sovereign nation and a member of the East African Community (EAC), has the full right to decide who enters its borders. No other nation should impose pressure on Tanzania regarding immigration issues."

His remarks were made in response to an incident where several prominent Kenyan figures were barred from entering Tanzania.

Mwaura further clarified that Kenya remains committed to maintaining good relations with its neighbors, saying, "We respect the authority of neighboring nations, and it is our firm belief that diplomacy is the best tool for resolving such matters. We will continue to encourage dialogue and mutual respect in dealing with issues of this nature."he added

This development comes after a number of Kenyan leaders were prevented from entering Tanzania upon arriving at Julius Nyerere International Airport.

The individuals were there to attend a legal proceeding related to the case of Chadema Chairman, Tundu Lissu, who has faced numerous legal challenges in Tanzania.

Among the individuals denied entry were Martha Karua, a leading opposition politician, and Willy Mutunga, the former Chief Justice of Kenya. Karua expressed her frustration, stating, "It is deeply concerning that we are being barred from attending a critical case in a neighboring country. We only wish to witness the process of justice. We will continue to advocate for democratic values and human rights across the region."

Mutunga also voiced his disappointment, adding, "This action by Tanzania is a setback for regional cooperation. We must ensure that the fundamental principles of democracy and justice are upheld for all citizens, regardless of nationality."he added

The move has sparked mixed reactions within Kenya, with some supporting the government’s position on respecting Tanzania’s sovereignty, while others have criticized the denial of entry as an infringement on regional freedoms and solidarity.

As the situation continues to unfold, both countries are urged to pursue diplomatic avenues to address the issue and ensure that regional cooperation remains a cornerstone of the East African Community.
