Tanzania is mourning the death of former Prime Minister Cleopa David Msuya. He died on Wednesday morning, May 7, 2025, at Mzena Hospital in Dar es Salaam.
He was 94 years old.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan announced the sad news to the nation. She said Msuya had suffered from heart problems for a long time.
He was treated at the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute, Mzena Hospital, and also in London, United Kingdom.
President Samia offered her condolences to Msuya’s family, friends, and all Tanzanians. She said the country has lost a great leader. She declared seven days of national mourning from May 7 to May 13. During this time, flags will fly at half-mast.
Cleopa Msuya was born on January 4, 1931, in Chomvu Village, Usangi, Mwanga District, Kilimanjaro Region. He worked in government for many years. He served twice as Prime Minister and once as First Vice President of Tanzania.
Msuya was known for his honesty, hard work, and love for his country. He helped shape Tanzania’s economy and public service. He worked closely with former President Julius Nyerere to build the nation after independence.
In the 1980s and 1990s, Msuya played a big role in guiding Tanzania through economic reforms. He believed in development that helped all people, not just a few.
Many people respected Msuya, even from different political groups. He set a good example for future leaders.
The government will give more information about the funeral arrangements. Many leaders and groups, including those from the East African Community, have already sent their condolences.
Msuya’s death is a time for the nation to remember the values of good leadership, patriotism, and service. His life and work will continue to inspire Tanzanians for years to come.
