Dr. Yonazi offers condolences to Msuya’s family

Dr. Jim Yonazi, Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office (Policy, Parliament, and Coordination), visited the family of the late Cleopa David Msuya on May 8, 2025, to offer condolences following the former statesman’s passing.

Cleopa Msuya, a revered figure in Tanzania’s post-independence history, passed away on May 7, 2025, at Mzena Hospital in Dar es Salaam, where he had been receiving treatment for a heart condition. He was 91.

Accompanied by senior government officials including Juma Mkomi, Permanent Secretary in the President’s Office for Public Service Management, and Ally Senga Gugu, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs Dr. Yonazi visited the Msuya family residence in Upanga, Dar es Salaam.

Speaking during the visit, Dr. Yonazi described the late Msuya as a symbol of dedication, patriotism, and integrity.

"Tanzania has lost a leader whose legacy is deeply embedded in the foundations of our nation," said Dr. Yonazi.

  "Mzee Msuya’s wisdom, discipline, and sense of duty were unmatched. He served this country with honor through some of its most defining moments."

He extended condolences on behalf of the government and the Prime Minister’s Office, assuring the family of the nation's solidarity during their time of grief.

"As we mourn his passing, we must also reflect on the values he upheld values that continue to guide our public service," he added.

Family members, visibly moved by the visit, expressed their appreciation for the outpouring of national support.

"We are grateful for the presence of government leaders today," said a family spokesperson. "It shows how much Mzee Msuya’s work and life meant to the country."

Msuya served in various senior roles, including as Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, and was widely respected for his calm, principled leadership and contributions to Tanzania’s economic development.

Funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course, according to the family.
