The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has urged citizens in 15 regions currently participating in the first round of the second phase of the Permanent Voter Register (PVR) update to make full use of the remaining days to register and verify their information.
This call aims to ensure that all eligible voters safeguard their fundamental right to vote in the upcoming elections later this year.
INEC Chairperson, Court of Appeal Judge Jacobs Mwambegele, made the appeal during a visit to various voter registration centers in the Katavi Region.
“I strongly encourage citizens in the 15 regions where this phase of the voter register update is ongoing to come forward and ensure their information is up to date. Eligible voters should register, update their details, and help remove ineligible individuals from the Permanent Voter Register. Only a few days remain, so the time to act is now,” said Judge Mwambegele.
He explained that this phase includes the public display of the preliminary voter register, giving citizens an opportunity to review and correct their information.
They can also file objections against any individuals listed in the register who do not meet the eligibility criteria. The preliminary register has been posted at all the centers used during the first phase of the update.
Judge Mwambegele noted that the overall progress of the exercise has been positive, with high public turnout in the regions he visited Iringa, Njombe, and Ruvuma. Citizens there are actively registering, updating their details, and reporting individuals who no longer qualify to remain on the register.
“Overall, the exercise is going smoothly. Many citizens have turned up to update their information. Additionally, those who are no longer eligible have been removed from the register. Every center I visited reported successful registration, updates, and removals,” he said.
The voter register update is being conducted in three phases. The first phase involves 15 regions; the second will cover 16 regions; and the third will focus on correctional institutions and training centers.
Regions included in the first phase are: Iringa, Geita, Kagera, Mara, Shinyanga, Mwanza, Simiyu, Rukwa, Tabora, Katavi, Kigoma, Ruvuma, Mbeya, Njombe, and Songwe. The exercise began on May 1 and is scheduled to conclude on May 7, 2025.
Voter registration officers from Nyasa and Mbinga Urban constituencies, Mr. Khalid Khalifa and Ms. Amina Hamisi Seif respectively, confirmed that the process is progressing well in their areas and encouraged citizens to continue participating.
“In Nyasa District Council, we have already registered 436 new voters and updated information for 415 others. Additionally, 68 individuals have been removed from the register due to ineligibility. With a few days left, we encourage more citizens to come forward,” said Mr. Khalifa.
According to Judge Mwambegele, this second phase aims to register 1,396,609 new voters, update the information of 1,092,383 voters, and remove 148,624 ineligible individuals from the voter register.
The first phase of the voter register update was conducted from July 20, 2024, to March 25, 2025.
