In a bold move to promote accurate measurement standards, the Weights and Measures Agency (WMA) in Tanzania’s Coast Region carried out surprise inspections at two fuel stations and one animal feed factory as part of the World Metrology Day celebrations.

Each year on May 20, World Metrology Day is celebrated globally to highlight the importance of measurements in daily life and the economy.

This year marked 150 years since the international metrology community began observing the day, which originated in 1875.

To mark the occasion, WMA inspectors visited Msolwa fuel station in Chalinze, the Animal Care animal feed factory in Kibaha Town, and Petro Africa fuel station in Misugusugu, Kibaha District.

Their goal: to check the accuracy of the weighing and measuring instruments used in trade and industry.

Senior Metrology Officer Abeid Jalala said the agency used the day to both inspect equipment and raise awareness among stakeholders about the importance of using verified measurement tools.

“We want traders and service providers to know that using approved measurements benefits them and their customers. It also promotes fair trade,” he said.

The inspections were well received.

Juma Munis, the manager of Msolwa fuel station, expressed appreciation for WMA’s routine checks.

“They visit us regularly, not just to inspect, but also to educate us. This ensures we follow the law and serve our customers fairly,” he noted.

Other stakeholders also acknowledged the value of the outreach, saying it helped build trust in their services.

Some mentioned that customers are more likely to return to businesses that are transparent about weights and measures.

The agency’s visit serves as a reminder that accurate measurements are more than just a technical issue—they impact economic trust, consumer protection, and fair competition.

By actively engaging with businesses during World Metrology Day, WMA has shown its commitment to creating a market environment built on precision and integrity.

As the world marks 150 years of metrology, Tanzania’s Coast Region has taken a proactive step toward ensuring businesses remain accountable to the tools they use and the promises they make to consumers.
