The Journalists Workers Union of Tanzania (JOWUTA) has appealed to the Journalists Accreditation Board (JAB) to extend the registration period for journalists applying for electronic Press Cards through the TAI-Habari system.
The board had initially announced a one-month window, from May 21 to June 22, 2025, during which journalists were expected to register via the system to obtain the official electronic press identification.
While acknowledging JAB’s efforts, JOWUTA noted that many journalists have encountered technical difficulties that have made it hard to complete registration within the given timeframe.
“Many journalists have faced network and system-related challenges, preventing them from completing the registration process,” said Mussa Juma Siwayombe, JOWUTA’s National Chairperson.
He added that “We are requesting the board to consider extending the registration period by at least one more month to allow more journalists to comply with the law and continue their work without disruption.”
The union urged its members across the country to register as required and encouraged those in Dar es Salaam who are experiencing difficulties to visit JOWUTA offices for support.
It also appealed to media owners to assist journalists in their institutions by facilitating registration and ensuring payment of the required fees.
To register for the electronic press card, journalists are required to visit https://taihabari.jab.go.tz and provide several documents, including a letter of confirmation from an employer or proof of freelance status, a valid National ID (NIDA), and a registration fee of TZS 50,000 payable electronically.
All documents must be uploaded in PDF format, including a passport-size photo, certified academic certificates, and a work confirmation or introductory letter.
JOWUTA emphasized that proper registration is essential not only for compliance with the law but also for enhancing the professionalism and recognition of journalism in the country.
