Dubai, 5 May 2025 – Airtel Africa has announced a landmark agreement with SpaceX to deliver Starlink’s high-speed satellite internet services to its customers across the continent, marking a significant step toward bridging Africa’s digital divide.

Currently, SpaceX has secured operating licenses in 9 out of the 14 countries within Airtel Africa’s footprint, with applications for the remaining five countries underway.

Once fully operational, the partnership will significantly enhance Airtel Africa’s satellite connectivity offerings, providing reliable internet access to enterprises, small businesses, schools, health centers, and other underserved socio-economic communities—even in the most remote parts of Africa.

Managing Director and CEO of Airtel Africa Mr. Sunil Taldar, emphasized the transformative nature of the partnership.

“We remain deeply committed to our vision of enriching lives across Africa. This strategic collaboration with SpaceX reinforces our dedication to advancing the continent’s digital economy. Next-generation satellite connectivity will ensure that every individual, business, and community—even in the most remote regions—can access reliable and affordable voice and data services,” he noted.

In addition to retail connectivity, Airtel Africa will explore opportunities to expand rural network coverage through cellular backhauling, leveraging Starlink’s capabilities to support mobile services in hard-to-reach areas.

The two companies also plan to explore broader areas of cooperation, with SpaceX set to benefit from Airtel Africa’s extensive ground infrastructure and on-the-ground expertise, further strengthening the continent’s digital ecosystem.

On his part, Mr. Chad Gibbs, SpaceX’s Vice President of Starlink Business Operations, noted that “We’re thrilled to partner with Airtel to bring Starlink’s transformative internet capabilities to more people across Africa. Starlink is now available in over 20 African markets, and this agreement showcases how collaboration with regional telecom leaders like Airtel can accelerate access to fast, reliable internet. Airtel has played a pivotal role in Africa’s telecom journey, and working alongside them is a natural fit for extending our footprint.”

This agreement marks a significant milestone in Airtel Africa’s mission to expand digital inclusion and strengthen its service offerings through strategic partnerships and innovation.
