Tabora Regional Police Commander Richard Abwao has confirmed that Yanga SC’s Media and Communications Manager, Ally Kamwe, has been released on bail after being detained for allegedly using offensive language against government officials.
His arrest came shortly after Yanga secured a 3-0 victory over Tabora United in an NBC Tanzania Premier League match at Ali Hassan Mwinyi Stadium in Tabora.
Kamwe was taken into police custody around 1:00 AM following the match, which saw Yanga dominate their hosts and claim all three points.
His arrest stirred reactions among football fans and Yanga supporters, who were eager to know the circumstances surrounding his detention.
According to Commander Abwao, Kamwe was granted bail while investigations into the allegations against him continue.
“He has been released on bail and is now free to travel outside Tabora. However, he will be required to report back on April 21 as scheduled,” Abwao stated.
Following his release, Kamwe is now en route to Dar es Salaam. Meanwhile, the Yanga squad and technical team have departed Tabora with confidence after their impressive league victory.
The match, which was highly anticipated, ended in Yanga’s favor, solidifying their position in the league standings.
The controversy surrounding Kamwe's arrest stems from remarks he allegedly made before the match. Reports indicate that he accused Tabora Regional Commissioner Paul Chacha of offering TZS 60 million to Tabora United as an incentive to defeat Yanga. His comments reportedly sparked tension, leading to his detention.
Football analysts and fans have expressed mixed reactions to the situation, with some questioning whether Kamwe’s remarks warranted police action.
Others argue that football should remain free from political interference and off-field controversies.
Despite the drama, Yanga remains focused on its league campaign, with its players and coaching staff determined to maintain their strong form.
The team’s victory over Tabora United further strengthens their bid for the league title, keeping them in a favorable position as the season progresses.
As Kamwe prepares to resume his media duties, the case against him remains open. Authorities have yet to disclose further details on the legal course of action, but his scheduled reporting on April 21 will likely determine the next steps.
For now, Yanga fans can celebrate their team’s triumph, while Kamwe awaits the outcome of the ongoing investigations.
