Dr. Biteko attends Mwenge wa Uhuru launch in coast region

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy,  Dr. Doto Biteko, participated in the official national launch of the 2025 Mwenge wa Uhuru race today, April 2, at the Education Corporation Grounds in Kibaha, Coast Region. 

The event, which marks the beginning of the annual torch relay symbolizing unity, peace, and development, was graced by various national leaders and dignitaries.

The Guest of Honor at the ceremony was the Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Dr. Philip Isdor Mpango, who presided over the event, emphasizing the significance of this year’s theme: “Come Forward and Participate Peacefully in the 2025 General Election.”

The theme underscores the importance of national unity, democratic participation, and maintaining peace and stability during the upcoming elections.

During his speech, Dr. Mpango urged Tanzanians to embrace the spirit of Mwenge wa Uhuru, which has historically played a role in promoting development projects across the country.

 He highlighted that the torch’s journey would cover various regions, inaugurating and inspecting projects aimed at improving social services such as health, education, infrastructure, and water supply.

 Dr. Biteko, in his address, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that the torch relay continues to inspire unity and progress among Tanzanians.

 He noted that the event is a reminder of the country’s rich history and the sacrifices made to achieve independence.

 He encouraged citizens to actively participate in national development efforts and work together towards a prosperous future.

The event was attended by several high-profile leaders, including the Prime Minister of Tanzania,  Kassim Majaliwa, who expressed his appreciation for the participation of different government institutions and private stakeholders in making the event successful.

 He called upon all Tanzanians, especially the youth, to uphold the values of peace and unity that Mwenge wa Uhuru represents.

Also present at the ceremony were the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of Tanzania,  Mussa Zungu, former President  Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, and Coast Regional Commissioner  Abubakar Kunenge. 

Other government officials from Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar also graced the occasion, demonstrating the national significance of the Mwenge wa Uhuru relay.

The launch ceremony featured various cultural performances, speeches, and exhibitions showcasing government achievements and development projects across the country.

 Different organizations also used the platform to educate citizens on key national issues, including voter registration and civic responsibilities ahead of the 2025 General Election.

Following the official launch, the Mwenge wa Uhuru torch is expected to travel through all regions of Tanzania, where it will be used to officiate development projects and promote messages of national unity, democracy, and economic growth.

 The relay is a long-standing tradition that dates back to Tanzania’s independence, serving as a symbol of freedom and hope for a better future.

As the torch continues its journey, Tanzanians are encouraged to participate actively in community development initiatives and work together towards building a peaceful and prosperous nation. 

Government officials reiterated their call for all citizens to maintain unity and cooperation, especially as the country prepares for the upcoming elections.

The event concluded with a symbolic lighting of the torch and a call for national solidarity, marking yet another chapter in the history of the Mwenge wa Uhuru relay, which continues to be an integral part of Tanzania’s cultural and political landscape.
