Tanzania and Egypt have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in power projects, ensuring the continuation of the partnership established by the founders of both nations.
Deputy Minister for Energy, Judith Kapinga, made this statement today, March 20, 2025, in Pwani Region during a visit to the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project (JNHPP) alongside Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Immigration, and Egyptians Abroad, Dr. Badir Abdelatty. The visit was part of Dr. Badir’s official tour with his delegation.
Hon. Kapinga commended the collaboration between the two countries, emphasizing the role of leadership in ensuring the project’s success.
“We deeply appreciate President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan for her strong leadership and commitment to this project.Her efforts have provided a solid foundation for its successful implementation, and today, we are witnessing the tangible results of her dedication,” she stated.
She further highlighted that Egypt has executed the JNHPP in accordance with Tanzania’s energy needs, with eight out of nine turbines now operational and connected to the national grid.
After inspecting the project, Dr. Badir lauded the longstanding cooperation between Tanzania and Egypt and expressed his appreciation for Tanzania’s trust in Egypt’s expertise.
“We are honored to have been entrusted with this project, which stands as a symbol of African unity and self-reliance. This initiative will not only benefit the people of Tanzania but also serve as an inspiration for the rest of Africa to invest in sustainable energy solutions,” he said.
He emphasized that African nations must take pride in energy projects that contribute to the continent’s development and assured that Egypt would continue working with Tanzania on similar projects in the future.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs responsible for East African Affairs, Dannis Londo, underscored the importance of diplomatic ties in fostering economic growth.
“Tanzania and Egypt share a strong diplomatic relationship, and we will continue working together to unlock more economic opportunities, particularly in the energy sector,” he remarked.
The visit was attended by Tanzania’s Ambassador to Egypt, Egypt’s Ambassador to Tanzania, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Oil, Dr. James Mataragio, and senior officials from the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation.
