The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Infrastructure has called on the government to closely monitor the contractor, SINOHYDRO Corporation Ltd, to ensure the timely completion of the third phase of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT3) project.
Speaking today, March 17, 2025, in Dar es Salaam, the committee’s chairman, Selemani Moshi Kakoso, said the 23.3 km project from the city center to Gongolamboto will help reduce traffic congestion and boost economic activities.
“The government has invested a lot in BRT roads around Dar es Salaam. These roads must be completed on time so people can travel more easily to work and business areas,” he said.
“We are happy with the progress, but only four months are left before the deadline. Work day and night to complete it on time,” Kakoso added.
He also suggested that the government review BRT road designs to allow for emergencies.
“Experts should check areas where barriers are unnecessary and remove or reduce them. This will make the roads more useful for everyone,” he emphasized.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister for Works, Eng. Godfrey Kasekenya, said the BRT3 project is 80% complete and should be finished by June this year.
He also warned traders working in construction areas to stop immediately, saying their activities slow down the work and put them at risk.
“I instruct the contractor to hire more workers to ensure the project is completed by June,” Kasekenya said.
BRT3 Project Manager, Engineer Frank Mbilinyi, said the BRT team, together with local authorities, is educating people to stop encroaching on roads under construction.
The government is building more roads to ease congestion in Dar es Salaam. The first phase (Kivukoni-Kimara-Magomeni-Morocco, 20.9 km) and the second phase (Magomeni-Mbagala) are complete.
Construction is ongoing for the third phase (Posta-Gongolamboto, 23.3 km) and the fourth phase (city center-Tegeta, 29.13 km).
