On March 21, 2025, the Prime Minister of Tanzania, Kassim Majaliwa, officially launched the country’s national tree planting campaign in Njombe District.
The event took place at the Sabasaba Grounds, where the Prime Minister planted a native Mkangazi tree (Khaya anthotheca), marking the beginning of an important environmental initiative aimed at enhancing the nation’s green cover.
The launch coincided with the observance of World Forest Day and National Tree Planting Day. This year’s theme, "Enhancing the Value of Forest Products for Sustainable Forest Resource Management for Present and Future Generations," underscores the importance of maintaining and expanding Tanzania’s forests.
The Prime Minister’s participation in the campaign sends a strong message to Tanzanians about the need for collective action in preserving the environment for future generations.
Majaliwa, in his speech, emphasized the significant role that forests play in the country’s overall development.
He highlighted the importance of trees such as Mkangazi, which provide a variety of benefits, including timber, medicinal properties, and fuelwood.
These trees, alongside many others, are vital for sustainable land management and environmental conservation.
The Prime Minister called on all Tanzanians, especially those in rural areas, to participate in tree planting and take on a more active role in forest conservation.
In addition to the environmental benefits, the Prime Minister also pointed out the economic opportunities that arise from forests.
By promoting the sustainable use of forest resources, Tanzania can boost its timber industry, improve livelihoods, and contribute to the country’s economic growth.
He encouraged local communities to adopt best practices in forest management and collaborate with government agencies and environmental organizations to ensure the long-term sustainability of Tanzania’s forest resources.
The campaign is part of a larger effort by the government to address environmental challenges, such as deforestation, land degradation, and climate change.
In recent years, Tanzania has faced significant environmental challenges due to unsustainable farming practices, logging, and the expansion of urban areas.
As a result, tree planting campaigns have become a crucial part of the government’s strategy to combat these issues and protect the country’s natural resources.
Hon. Majaliwa’s call to action also aligns with global efforts to tackle climate change. By increasing tree cover and restoring degraded lands, Tanzania is contributing to international initiatives aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preserving biodiversity.
As the national tree planting campaign gains momentum, the government hopes to inspire a sense of environmental responsibility among citizens.
Local schools, community groups, and youth organizations are also being encouraged to participate in tree planting activities, further fostering a culture of environmental stewardship across the country.
The success of this campaign will not only contribute to the nation’s green growth but will also leave a lasting legacy for future generations to enjoy.
Through continued efforts, Tanzania can ensure a healthier, more sustainable environment for all its citizens.
