Government pledges to partner with private sector for economic growth

By The Respondent Reporter

The government has acknowledged the crucial role of collaboration between the public and private sectors in driving the nation’s economic growth.

It has promised to continue fostering strong partnerships with the private sector to ensure national development.

This statement was made by the Acting Commissioner of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Unit at the Ministry of Finance, Mr. Bashiru Taratibu, during the conclusion of a training session on the PPP concept, the PPP Act (Chapter 103), and the National PPP Policy.

The training, aimed at equipping budget officers from the Ministry of Finance with essential knowledge, was held at the Small Treasury Office in Morogoro Region.

Mr. Taratibu called on the private sector to continue its collaboration with the government in its efforts to grow the economy, ensuring that citizens have access to vital services such as healthcare, water, education, and other public services.

"Many countries have adopted this approach to ensure that development projects are successfully implemented with the involvement of the private sector. We strongly encourage the private sector to partner with the government in delivering the services that have traditionally been provided by the state," Mr. Taratibu said.

He further explained that the objective of the training was to equip Ministry of Finance staff with the necessary skills in managing Public-Private Partnerships, recognizing that they play a key role in budgeting and contributing to the nation’s economic development.

“We have brought you here so you can collaborate effectively, building collective strength. When a project arises, you will have a clear understanding of your roles as members of the PPP, Ministry of Finance, enabling you to analyze and advise the Minister of Finance accordingly,” Mr. Taratibu added.

On behalf of the training participants, Mr. Tumwesige Kazaura, Budget Officer for the Administration and Human Resource Management Department at the Ministry of Finance and the Chairperson of the training, expressed appreciation for the knowledge gained, emphasizing the enhanced understanding of the importance of Public-Private Partnerships.

“This training has given us a deeper understanding of the significant work the Ministry undertakes. Questions about why PPP projects are not visible should no longer come from our experts. Instead, we will serve as ambassadors, providing clear answers to other professionals outside the Ministry,” said Mr. Kazaura.

In addition, Ms. Angelina Chilewa, Budget Officer at the Legal Services Department of the Ministry of Finance, praised the Ministry for organizing the training and vowed to continue educating the public about the benefits of Public-Private Partnerships.

“We are extremely grateful for this training, and we pledge to be ambassadors, spreading the word within our offices and communities about the advantages that the government can gain from PPP projects,” Ms. Chilewa concluded.
