The Parliamentary Investment Committee (PIC) has expressed satisfaction with the progress of the 260-kilometer Kasulu-Kabingo road project in Kigoma, which is being implemented in four phases at a cost of over TZS 400 billion.
Speaking after an inspection visit, PIC Chairman Augustine Vuma commended the speed and quality of the work, stating, “We are highly impressed with the progress, which has now reached 83 percent. Executing all four phases simultaneously in one region is a remarkable achievement that reflects the government’s commitment to infrastructure development.”
He urged the Ministry of Works and the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) to maintain the momentum and ensure timely completion of the project.
Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Works, Dr. Charles Msonde, emphasized the significance of the project, noting, “This is a major investment jointly funded by the Government of Tanzania and the African Development Bank (AfDB). Contracts were signed between 2020 and 2022, and each phase has a 36-month implementation timeline.”
According to TANROADS, the project has progressed at varying rates. The 68.25-kilometer Kasulu-Manyovu road is 84.63 percent complete and is expected to be finished by May 30, 2025.
The 70.5-kilometer Kanyani Junction-Mvugwe road stands at 75.38 percent completion, with an expected completion date of October 30, 2025.
Meanwhile, the 59.35-kilometer Mvugwe-Nduta Junction road has reached 90.75 percent and is set to be finalized by May 7, 2025. The 62.50-kilometer Nduta Junction-Kabingo road has been fully completed at 100 percent.
Dr. Msonde underscored the transformative impact of these projects, stating, “This road network is a vital part of the Western Corridor, connecting Tanzania with Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Once completed, it will not only facilitate trade but also enhance the livelihoods of communities along the corridor.”
The Kasulu-Kabingo road is expected to improve transportation efficiency, reduce travel time, and unlock economic opportunities for Kigoma and beyond.
