Morogoro Region has made significant progress in combating malnutrition, reducing the stunting rate among children under five from 33.4% in the 2015/16 Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey (TDHS) to 30.6% in the 2022 TDHS report.
Morogoro Regional Commissioner, Adam Kighoma Malima, highlighted this achievement while presenting the region's 2025/2026 budget plan before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Regional Administration and Local Government (TAMISEMI) today, March 20, 2025, in Dodoma.
According to Malima, this progress is a result of the effective implementation of targeted nutrition interventions aimed at improving public health.
“Municipal councils have been allocating budgets for nutrition programs through internal revenues and the Health Sector Basket Fund (HSBF). In the 2024/2025 financial year, a total of TZS 850,754,621.45 was set aside for nutrition initiatives—equivalent to TZS 1,868 per child under five. By February 2025, TZS 505,638,660.52, or 59.43% of the allocated funds (TZS 1,480 per child), had been disbursed and utilized,” Malima stated.
