The Minister for Finance, Dr. Mwigulu Lameck Nchemba (MP), has witnessed the signing of a TZS 119.9 billion construction agreement for the Tunduma-Vwawa Water Project.
The agreement was signed between the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Water, Eng. Mwajuma Waziri, representing the government, and Mr. Ning Yunfeng, Project Manager of China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).
The project will source water from the Momba River in Momba District, Songwe Region.
The project includes the construction of a water intake facility with a storage capacity of 21.5 million liters, a water treatment and processing plant capable of producing 20 million liters per day, and a 96-kilometer pipeline network with a diameter of 100mm.
Additionally, water storage tanks will be built in strategic locations, including a 5-million-liter tank in Uwanjani/Uhuru, Tunduma Town Council, a 3-million-liter tank in Ikana Village, and a 2-million-liter tank in Nkangamo Village.
The project also involves the procurement of pumps, office construction, and other essential infrastructure.
Speaking to hundreds of residents who gathered at Uwanjani grounds in Tunduma for the event, Dr. Nchemba reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fully funding the project, in line with President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s pledge to improve water accessibility and ease the burden on women.
Minister for Water, Jumaa Aweso, commended President Samia for allocating nearly TZS 120 billion from domestic funds to address water shortages in Tunduma, Vwawa, and Mlowo.
Once completed in 18 months, the project will provide clean and safe water to 219,309 residents in the three towns, significantly improving their quality of life.
