Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has expressed satisfaction with the progress of preparations for the lighting of the Independence Flame, an event that will span across 31 regions and 195 councils throughout the country.

The lighting ceremony, scheduled for April 2, 2025, is a symbolic event that will unite Tanzanians in celebration of the nation’s freedom and independence. The guest of honor will be Vice President Dr. Philip Isdor Mpango.

During his inspection of the preparations on Sunday, March 30, 2025, at the Kibaha Education Institute grounds in the Coast Region, Prime Minister Majaliwa praised the work done so far.

He acknowledged the extensive efforts made by local authorities and organizers and emphasized the importance of completing the remaining tasks ahead of the event.

“I am satisfied with the progress made so far. You have done an incredible job to reach this stage,” Majaliwa said.

“However, we must ensure that the few remaining areas are completed in a timely manner. Let us work together to ensure that the event takes place without any hitches.”

The lighting of the Independence Flame is a significant annual event in Tanzania, representing the country’s journey to freedom.

As the flame travels through various regions, it serves as a powerful symbol of unity, patriotism, and the collective history of the Tanzanian people.

The event is also a time for Tanzanians to come together, reflect on their shared struggles and triumphs, and celebrate the progress made in the nation's development.

Prime Minister Majaliwa’s visit to inspect the preparations at the Kibaha Education Institute grounds was crucial for ensuring the event’s success.

The Coast Region is responsible for hosting the official ceremony, and substantial efforts have gone into making sure the venue is ready for the arrival of thousands of guests, dignitaries, and citizens.

Speaking after the inspection, the Prime Minister urged coordinators to stay focused and ensure that all outstanding tasks are finalized in time for the event.

“We still have a few areas to finalize, and it is crucial that we complete them on time. Let us all work together to ensure that the event takes place without any hitches,” Majaliwa stated.

The Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office for Youth, Employment, and Disabled Affairs, Ridhiwani Kikwete, also provided an update on the preparations.

He shared that the event was 96% complete and assured that the remaining tasks would be finished in the coming days.

Kikwete has been overseeing the coordination of the national celebration and working closely with local authorities and various government bodies to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Earlier, the Regional Commissioner for the Coast Region, Abubakar Kunenge, gave a confident message regarding the region’s readiness.

“We are fully prepared to host the event and ensure it is a success,” Kunenge stated. He highlighted that logistical and security arrangements are in place, and he expressed optimism that the celebrations will be a testament to the region’s commitment to national events.

The lighting of the Independence Flame is much more than just a ceremonial occasion. It is an opportunity for Tanzanians to reflect on the country’s progress since independence in 1961.

It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought for the nation’s freedom and a call for continued unity, peace, and national development.

With Prime Minister Majaliwa’s leadership and the cooperation of various stakeholders, the event promises to be a resounding success, showcasing Tanzania’s dedication to honoring its history and future.

As preparations draw to a close, the country eagerly awaits the chance to gather together in celebration, marking yet another important milestone in Tanzania’s journey as an independent and united nation.
