Bulyanhulu Gold Mine in Kahama, Shinyanga, has been urged to allocate funds for health programs and HIV/AIDS awareness as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

Deputy Minister for Minerals, Dr. Steven Kiruswa, stressed the importance of investing in healthcare for communities surrounding mining operations.

“Mining companies have a responsibility to support public health,” he said during a visit by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and HIV/AIDS.

“The government has put regulations in place to ensure they allocate funds for community health projects, particularly for both communicable and non-communicable diseases.”

Dr. Kiruswa emphasized that proper funding for health initiatives would make a significant difference.

“By investing in healthcare, the mine can help prevent diseases, improve medical services, and educate the community on health matters,” he added. “This also includes supporting nearby health centers that serve thousands of people.”

Shinyanga Regional Commissioner, Anamringi Macha, applauded Bulyanhulu Mine for its contributions to local development.

“The mine has done a commendable job in funding water, roads, education, and agriculture projects,” he noted. “I encourage them to maintain this momentum and expand their support to healthcare.”

Meanwhile, Acting Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Health and HIV/AIDS, Hassan Mtenga, called for swift action.

“We expect Bulyanhulu Mine to act on the recommendations given by the committee,” he stated. “Health services in and around the mine must be improved, especially in combating infectious diseases and chronic illnesses.”

Dr. Catherine Joachim, Acting Director of the Tanzania Commission for AIDS (TACAIDS), highlighted the alarming HIV/AIDS statistics in mining areas.

“According to the 2024 report, 1.7 million people in Tanzania are living with HIV,” she revealed. “The 2022/2023 study found that 60,000 new infections occurred, and mining sites remain high-risk areas. This calls for immediate and focused intervention.”

In response, Bulyanhulu Mine’s General Manager, Victor Lule, welcomed the recommendations and pledged the company’s full support.

“We appreciate the insights shared by the committee,” he said. “Every suggestion will be implemented in line with CSR policies and government guidelines. We are committed to making a positive impact on the community.”
