The District Commissioner (DC) of Wanging'ombe in Njombe Region,  Zakaria Mwansasu, has praised the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) for supporting and taking part in a tree planting campaign aimed at planting 50,000 trees in different parts of the country.

Mwansasu shared his appreciation on February 6, 2025, during the launch of the campaign, which involved TANESCO staff, workers from the DC’s office, and local residents from Igwachanya ward.

The goal is to plant 25,000 trees in Wanging'ombe, with another 25,000 expected to be planted in Kilombero District, Morogoro Region.

"I want to thank TANESCO and the Environmental Journalists' Association for their efforts. I encourage them to continue promoting and carrying out these activities across the country.

We in Wanging'ombe are proud to be one of the districts that provide water to the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Dam," said Hon. Mwansasu.

He also mentioned that Wanging'ombe District is home to several water sources that flow into the Julius Nyerere Dam, which will generate 2,115 Megawatts of electricity when completed, significantly contributing to the country’s power supply.

"Because of this importance, as a district with water sources feeding into the dam, we must work harder to protect the environment," added Hon. Mwansasu.

TANESCO’s District Manager in Wanging'ombe, Francis Mvukie, thanked the Executive Director for funding the project, noting that it will directly benefit the electricity generation efforts.

"This tree planting is specifically aimed at supporting our electricity generation work. As the TANESCO Manager in Wanging'ombe, I am very grateful, and I also thank the whole TANESCO management for supporting this project," said Mr. Mvukie.

Amina Rajab, an Environmental Engineer from TANESCO Headquarters, said the tree planting is part of a larger campaign started in 2023.

So far, 8,000 trees have been planted in Wanging'ombe, with another 17,000 planned for various areas within the district.
