Veteran politician Dr. Willibrod Slaa has been arrested for questioning, according to the Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police.
The news spread quickly on social media on Friday, January 10, 2025, alongside a recording where Dr. Slaa informed the public about his arrest.
In the message, he stated that police officers had come for him and that he was being taken to the Mbweni Police Station in Dar es Salaam.
Dr. Slaa was reportedly arrested early on Friday while carrying out his usual activities near his home in Mbweni.
Later that day, Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police Commander Jumanne Muliro confirmed the arrest during an interview with Wasafi FM.
He stated that Dr. Slaa was being held for questioning and that the police were investigating certain matters. He also assured the public that the discussions were going well and that the legal process was being followed to determine the next steps.
Dr. Slaa is a well-known figure in Tanzanian politics. He served as the Secretary-General of the opposition party Chadema, was a Member of Parliament for Karatu, and also served as Tanzania’s Ambassador to Sweden.
His arrest is part of a larger trend involving opposition leaders in Tanzania, highlighting the ongoing tensions in the political landscape.
