Lissu stands apart from other Tanzanian politicians due to his unwavering
commitment to human rights, democracy, and justice, says Tanganyika Law Society
President Boniface Mwabukusi in his X account.
“Lissu
has earned a reputation as one of the few politicians who consistently speaks
out against human rights violations, the suppression of democracy, and the
abuse of power. His courageous stance on these issues has made him a beacon of
hope for many Tanzanians who are fighting for a more just and fair society,”
says TLS boss.
He
noted that in 2017, Lissu became a symbol of resilience after surviving an
assassination attempt. Despite the grave nature of the attack, he did not
retreat from his mission of defending the rights of Tanzanians. Instead, he has
become an even stronger voice in the fight for justice, using his legal
expertise to expose corruption and hold the government accountable.
“Lissu's
legal background further strengthens his political journey. His ability to
dissect legal matters and challenge abuses of power has made him an effective
leader, particularly in Parliament.”
He
is known for his sharp arguments and ability to engage in national debates on
critical issues, resonating deeply with both the public and his colleagues.
Mwabukusi says Lissu’s knowledge and
transparency on national matters, from politics to the economy, have made him a
trusted figure in the eyes of both the local and international communities.
“Lissu’s
integrity is one of the cornerstones of his political career. He has long been
vocal against corruption, holding both public officials and leaders accountable
for their actions,” he says.
He
added that the Chadema hopeful chairman’s commitment to fairness has made him a
respected figure within political circles, with a reputation that stretches
beyond Tanzania’s borders.
His
advocacy for good governance and human rights is recognized globally, making
him an influential figure in the fight for democracy.
But
as Lissu’s political influence grows, questions arise within his party, Chadema.
The upcoming leadership elections within the party have sparked significant
debate, as many wonder whether Lissu’s strong stand will be enough to unite a
fragmented party.
The
question on everyone’s mind is whether the internal rivalry among key party
figures, including those vying for positions of chairman and vice-chairman,
will hinder the party’s unity.
Despite
the challenges, the party’s internal politics have taken a new turn. Chadema’s
potential presidential candidate, Tundu Lissu, has found himself at the center
of a debate surrounding party dynamics.
A
particularly pertinent question is how the party will handle the race for the vice
presidency and chairman, positions that could greatly influence the party's
future direction.
The
issue becomes even more complex when high-profile figures such as Ezekia Dibogo
Wenje, Freman Aikael Mbowe, and John Wegesa Heche are seen aligning with or
opposing Lissu in these critical leadership battles.
What
has raised eyebrows is the apparent lack of clarity regarding the selection
process for the positions within the party.
Some
candidates, like Wenje, have already declared themselves as candidates for
leadership positions without the official approval of Chadema’s Central
Committee, which remains tasked with vetting all candidates.
This
has confused and raised questions about the integrity of the selection process.
Lissu’s supporters are particularly concerned that this premature campaign
rhetoric could lead to division within the party, further fragmenting what is
already a tense political environment.
The
party’s constitution strictly prohibits candidates from forming groups or
networks within the party with the intent of securing their positions. However,
the presence of "Team Mbowe" and "Team Lissu" has complicated
matters.
Both factions are actively promoting their
respective candidates, creating a divided atmosphere. This goes against the
party’s founding principles, which emphasize unity, integrity, and fairness.
Questions have arisen about whether these factions will be able to coexist
peacefully or whether they will tear the party apart.
Another
key issue that has come to the forefront is the growing animosity between
candidates who were once united. Lissu and Mbowe, along with other candidates,
have exchanged harsh words, undermining the party's core values of respect and
unity.
Chadema faces significant internal challenges
as it prepares for its leadership elections. If the party cannot resolve these
tensions, it risks alienating its supporters and losing its chance at
meaningful change.
These
questions are not only about Lissu’s role in Chadema but also about the party’s
future. The internal strife threatens to undermine everything Lissu has worked
for in his fight for democracy and justice.
If
these tensions continue to escalate, it could diminish the party's ability to
present a unified front to the Tanzanian electorate. The political battles
within Chadema are not just about personal power but about the future of
Tanzanian democracy itself.
Chadema
now faces a critical crossroads. The party must decide whether to embrace its
leaders' diverse strengths and work toward unity or allow division to tear it
apart.
Lissu’s leadership will undoubtedly play a
significant role in determining the direction of the party, but his ability to
unify Chadema's ranks and bring the various factions together will be crucial.
If
Chadema can rise above the infighting and focus on its core mission, it could
still present a formidable challenge to the ruling party.
However,
if the party cannot heal its divisions, it risks undermining everything Lissu
has fought for. The outcome of these elections on 21st January will
define not only Lissu’s political future but also the future of the Tanzanian
opposition as a whole.
