Tanzania advances in clean energy and rural electrification in 2024

By Alfred Zacharia

In 2024, Tanzania achieved remarkable progress in its energy sector, focusing on clean and sustainable energy initiatives that aim to transform the country’s energy landscape.

The government launched the National Strategy for Clean Cooking Energy (2024–2034), targeting an 80% adoption rate of clean cooking solutions by 2034.

This initiative seeks to reduce reliance on firewood and charcoal, which are not only harmful to public health but also major contributors to environmental degradation.

By promoting cleaner alternatives such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and biogas, the strategy aims to improve household air quality, reduce deforestation, and enhance overall living conditions for millions of Tanzanians.

Tanzania also attracted significant investments in renewable energy projects, valued at $18 billion. These projects emphasize harnessing solar, wind, and hydropower to increase electricity generation capacity.

With renewable energy being a global priority, Tanzania’s commitment to these projects positions the country as a leader in sustainable energy transition within the East African region.

Furthermore, the Rural Energy Agency (REA) made substantial strides in electrifying rural areas. By the end of 2024, a considerable number of villages had been connected to the national grid, transforming rural communities through improved access to electricity.

This progress has spurred economic growth, enhanced access to education and healthcare, and improved the quality of life for residents in previously underserved areas.

However, challenges in electricity distribution remained a pressing issue. Energy Minister Dr. Doto Biteko publicly criticized the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) for inefficiencies in some regions, urging the utility company to address service gaps and improve reliability.

Persistent power outages and delays in connecting new customers underscored the need for comprehensive reforms within the sector to ensure the benefits of increased generation capacity are fully realized by end-users.

On the international stage, Tanzania prepared to host the Africa Energy Summit in January 2025. This high-profile event aims to bring together leaders and stakeholders from across the continent to discuss Africa’s energy future and explore pathways for sustainable development.

Hosting this summit highlights Tanzania’s growing role as a key player in advancing clean energy solutions in Africa.

Overall, 2024 marked significant advancements in Tanzania’s energy sector, driven by ambitious policies, increased investments, and a focus on renewable energy.

While these achievements reflect the government’s commitment to improving energy access and sustainability, addressing persistent challenges in service delivery and infrastructure will be crucial for ensuring long-term success.

The country’s progress lays a strong foundation for continued growth and energy transformation in the years to come.
