President Mwinyi: new ZEC building to strengthen democracy in Zanzibar

By Alfred Zachria

The President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has stated that the construction of a new office building for the Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) is aimed at strengthening the country's democratic systems.

President Mwinyi made the remarks while laying the foundation stone for the construction of ZEC’s headquarters in Maisara, Urban District, West Urban Region.

He highlighted that the completion of the building will resolve a long-standing challenge faced by the Electoral Commission—lacking a suitable and efficient working space.

Dr. Mwinyi also noted that the decision to make the building a one-stop center for all electoral activities will enhance the efficiency of ZEC’s operations.

Furthermore, he commended ZEC and the Zanzibar Building Agency (ZBA) for their excellent oversight of the construction project, urging CRJE, the contractors, to ensure timely completion.

ZEC’s Director of Elections, Thabit Idarous Faina, announced that the building is expected to be completed and operational before the General Election in October this year.

The project involves the construction of two four-story buildings at a cost of approximately TZS 11.32 billion, funded by the Government’s General Fund. Currently, 81% of the construction work has been completed.

Faina explained that one building will serve as the Electoral Commission's offices, while the other will be dedicated to electoral operations.
