NEMC North Zone: balancing development and environmental protection

By Our Correspondent

The National Environment Management Council (NEMC) North Zone has demonstrated a robust commitment to safeguarding the environment while supporting Tanzania’s ambitious development goals.

Over the past six months, the council has supervised a wide range of projects, ensuring that they align with environmental standards. This delicate balancing act highlights the growing importance of sustainable practices as Tanzania’s economy continues to expand.

From July to December 2024, the council oversaw 1,286 health-related projects, a testament to its proactive efforts in ensuring compliance with environmental regulations in critical sectors.

According to Benjamin Dotto, NEMC North Zone Manager, the achievements underscore the council’s role in harmonizing economic growth with environmental preservation.

“We are committed to enforcing environmental policies and laws to ensure that economic growth aligns seamlessly with environmental conservation,” he said.

The council’s work is not confined to health projects alone. It also monitored development across tourism, energy, agriculture, and industrial investments.

Each project, whether in infrastructure, mining, or communication, underwent rigorous scrutiny to minimize environmental risks and ensure sustainable execution.

The strategic oversight reflects the council’s understanding of the interconnectedness of development and ecological integrity.

Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) remain a cornerstone of NEMC’s work. These assessments are essential in identifying potential environmental impacts and ensuring mitigation measures are in place before projects commence.

“Before any development project is implemented, it must undergo an EIA or preliminary environmental review to secure an Environmental Certificate. This ensures compliance and safeguards our ecosystems,” said Dotto.

Through such measures, the council has successfully facilitated projects like road construction and industrial development without compromising environmental standards.

The North Zone’s ecological significance further elevates the importance of NEMC’s role.

The region hosts globally recognized ecosystems, including Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Kilimanjaro National Park, and Tarangire National Park, contributing significantly to biodiversity and the tourism economy.

By integrating environmental policies into the development process, the council has safeguarded these critical resources, ensuring their longevity and sustained economic benefits.

Despite these achievements, challenges persist. Public awareness of environmental regulations remains inadequate, and resistance from some project developers occasionally hampers progress.

However, Dotto views these challenges as opportunities to strengthen partnerships and foster a culture of environmental responsibility.

“Our work is not just about enforcement but also education. We are working to raise awareness and ensure that everyone understands the importance of environmental sustainability,” he explained.

NEMC’s efforts in the North Zone over the past six months exemplify how thoughtful oversight can balance the need for development with the imperative to protect the environment.

As Tanzania continues to advance economically, the council’s work serves as a model for sustainable growth, demonstrating that economic progress and environmental preservation are not mutually exclusive but interdependent goals. By fostering this balance, NEMC is paving the way for a resilient and sustainable future for the country.
