Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Dr. Doto Biteko, has announced that the government is addressing the challenge of outdated electricity distribution infrastructure.
He explained that the current systems were built many years ago when demand was relatively low. Efforts to replace the old infrastructure with modern systems are already underway.
Speaking during the Dakika 45 program on ITV on January 20, 2025, Dr. Biteko highlighted the progress made in electrification efforts.
He stated that nearly 100% of villages in Tanzania have been connected to the national grid, a significant milestone in ensuring access to electricity across the country.
Dr. Biteko added that rural electrification projects are now focusing on reaching hamlets.
Out of the 64,000 hamlets nationwide, approximately 34,000 have already been connected to electricity.
This ongoing expansion aims to provide reliable power to even the most remote areas.
He also noted that electricity demand has increased significantly, driven by key economic sectors such as the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and major mining activities.
These developments underscore the importance of upgrading the infrastructure to meet growing energy needs efficiently.
