The Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC) has called for enhanced safety measures in the ongoing Sh75.8 billion Mbamba Bay Port construction in Nyasa District. Set to become a key hub for regional trade and transport, the port is expected to strengthen Tanzania’s connectivity with neighboring countries, particularly Malawi.
During a site visit, TASAC’s Board of Directors expressed their satisfaction with the project’s progress but stressed the need for safety to be a priority. Captain Mussa Mandia, Chairperson of the TASAC Board, praised the government’s investment while urging the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) to implement critical safety measures.
“We are impressed by the government’s investment in building a strategic port that will not only boost trade but also facilitate the safe transport of goods and passengers,” he said.
Captain Mandia highlighted the importance of safety infrastructure such as a communication tower for ship-to-shore communication and a designated docking area for rescue boats to handle emergencies. “We have seen the blueprint of the port as it will look once completed, but we advise the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) to establish safety plans before the port begins operating,” he added.
Acting TASAC Director General Nelson Mlali also emphasized the importance of addressing safety during the port’s construction phase. “TASAC is responsible for ensuring that the infrastructure supports safe docking and mooring of vessels, and we urge TPA to address these concerns early in the development process,” he said. He further encouraged all institutions involved in the project to visit the site and provide input to enhance the design and safety of the port.
The port is expected to serve as a major transit point for goods such as agricultural products, coal, and construction materials destined for Malawi. It will also facilitate passenger and cargo movement between Kyela and Mbamba Bay, creating opportunities for local communities. A road linking the port to Mbinga District and Mtwara Port is also under construction to integrate the region’s transport network and improve trade efficiency.
Captain Mandia emphasized that the project aligns with the Sixth Phase Government’s vision, led by President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, to transform infrastructure and drive economic growth. “This strategic investment will not only bolster trade but also contribute significantly to Tanzania’s economic development,” he said.
As construction continues, TASAC’s insistence on safety measures ensures the port will not only meet international standards but also serve as a key driver of regional economic growth and integration.
