Kidunda dam: a promise of reliable water supply for three regions

By Lilian Kasenene, Morogoro

The construction of Kidunda Dam is poised to be a game-changer for the regions of Morogoro, Pwani, and Dar es Salaam, promising to resolve long-standing water supply challenges for millions of residents.

With a capacity to store 190 million cubic meters of water upon completion, the dam is set to transform water access in these regions, which have struggled with inconsistent and inadequate supply. This initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to improving essential services and enhancing the quality of life for its citizens.

Speaking during her inspection visit to the project, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Water, Eng. Mwajuma Waziri, stressed the significance of timely completion. She urged the contractor, Sinohydro, to expedite the construction process and ensure the project is delivered on schedule.

“This dam will play a critical role in addressing water challenges in Morogoro, Pwani, and Dar es Salaam. It is not just a project but a lifeline for millions who depend on reliable water supply,” said Eng. Mwajuma.

She acknowledged the unwavering support of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, noting that funding for the project has been secured, allowing the focus to shift to effective implementation.

“The funds are in place, and now it is time for the contractor to intensify efforts to ensure that this vision becomes a reality for the people,” she added.

Accompanying her was Meshack Anyingisye, Commissioner for Budget at the Ministry of Finance, who highlighted the broader economic and social impact of the project. He emphasized that ensuring water security would unlock development opportunities, particularly in the industrial and agricultural sectors, which rely heavily on reliable water access.

“This project is a cornerstone for the future growth of these regions. The Ministry of Water must maintain strict oversight to ensure timely and successful completion,” said Anyingisye.

Once completed, the Kidunda Dam will not only meet the daily water needs of millions but also support urbanization and industrial expansion in Dar es Salaam, boost agricultural productivity in Morogoro, and secure sustainable development in Pwani.

For the residents of these regions, the dam represents a brighter future—a foundation for health, economic prosperity, and improved livelihoods.
