The highly anticipated National Baseball and Softball Championships for secondary schools from mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar begin today at Azania Secondary School Grounds in Dar es Salaam. The tournament, which runs until December 10, 2024, promises thrilling action from young talents across the country.

The event was officially launched yesterday, December 8, with an exciting match between the Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar national teams. Mainland Tanzania secured a convincing 10-4 victory.

Speaking about the tournament, coordinator Abubakary Nachiwa highlighted that the competition targets both boys’ and girls’ secondary school teams, aiming to nurture talent and form national teams for international competitions.

“These championships will help us select a girls’ softball team to compete internationally in June 2025 and a boys’ baseball team for tournaments in September 2025 in Japan,” Nachiwa explained.

He added that selected players will undergo special training camps from December 11 to 22, 2024, in preparation for their respective international tournaments.

“The girls’ team will participate in the Women’s Softball Championship in Takasaki, Japan, in June 2025, while the boys’ team will head to Yokohama, Japan, later that year,” he elaborated.

Nachiwa expressed pride in the progress achieved through these annual championships, which serve as a platform to develop young athletes and elevate the sports of baseball and softball in the country.

The stage is set for a competitive and rewarding championship, showcasing the future stars of Tanzania on the road to global success.
