Government to Improve Services for Landslide Victims in Hanang

By James Mwanamyoto,

Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has announced that the government will establish schools, dispensaries, a secondary school, and a health center to bring essential social services closer to the newly resettled landslide victims in Hanang District, Manyara Region.

The Prime Minister made this statement while in Hanang District, where he officially handed over 109 newly built houses to landslide victims.

The houses were constructed through a partnership between the government and the Red Cross Society of Tanzania, located in Waret hamlet, Gidagamowd village.

“We want these families to integrate with the rest of the community, live here, and access all necessary social services. Therefore, we will build schools, a dispensary, a secondary school, and a health center to meet their needs,” emphasized Prime Minister Majaliwa.

He further explained that of the 109 houses handed over, 73 were funded by the government, 35 by the Red Cross Society of Tanzania, and one by the Tanzania Women’s Union (UWT).

Prime Minister Majaliwa also commended the collaborative efforts that led to the successful construction of the houses, which were overseen by a team of experts from the President's Office – PO-RALG, the Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministry for Finance, the Manyara Regional Commissioner’s Office, the Hanang District Commissioner’s Office, and the Hanang District Council.

In addition, Prime Minister Majaliwa praised the Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA) for their excellent work on road construction in the area.

He noted that despite the heavy rains, the roads remained intact and were not washed away.

“I want to thank the Minister of PO-RALG and TARURA for the great work in constructing roads in this area where 109 houses have been built. The next step is to ensure these roads are paved, so I encourage you to review your budget and allocate funds for this work,” he said.

The landslides in Hanang District, which occurred on December 7, 2023, in Katesh town and surrounding villages, caused significant damage, leaving many residents homeless. In response, the government took swift action to support those affected, and as a result, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa handed over the 109 houses to the landslide victims.
