The government has launched a significant initiative to address water shortages in Njombe through the $15 million (approximately Sh 40 billion) 28 Towns Water Supply Project.

This ambitious project is set to alleviate water challenges in three key wards: Ramadhani, Njombe Mjini, and Mjimwema. By 2026, it is expected that the initiative will be fully operational, dramatically increasing daily water supply capacity from the current 5 million liters to 17 million liters.

During a visit to the Hagafilo River water source, which will be the primary supplier for the project, Njombe District Commissioner Kisaa Kasongwa emphasized the importance of prioritizing residents in employment opportunities and sourcing construction materials from within the region.

The project, implemented under the nationwide 28 Towns Water Supply Scheme, aims to ensure reliable access to clean water for Njombe residents, improving their quality of life and reducing dependency on water rationing.

Eng. Robert Lupoja, Acting Director of the Njombe Urban Water and Sanitation Authority (NJUWASA), confirmed that the project is on track for completion by April 2026.

Residents have expressed optimism, anticipating reduced water bills and improved access to clean water once the project is completed. Currently, the region relies on a rationing system, which the project is expected to eliminate.

This initiative is a testament to the government’s commitment to enhancing essential services and addressing pressing community needs.
