Government restores 74.7 Km of Roads in Hanang after floods

By Alfred Zacharia

The government, through the Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA), has completed the restoration of 74.7 kilometers of road infrastructure in Hanang District.

The roads were heavily impacted by severe flooding in late 2023, which brought mud, logs, and rocks, causing significant damage.

Engineer Paul Mlia, the TARURA Manager for Hanang District, reported that 74.7 kilometers of roads were affected, along with 14 bridges.

Of the restored roads, 19.7 kilometers are located in Katesh Town, and 55 kilometers are in the areas surrounding Mount Hanang. These repairs have now been finalized.

The government acted quickly, carrying out an assessment of the damage to ensure that services were restored as soon as possible.

In addition to the roads, key social infrastructure, including places of worship, the Katesh market, and residential homes, were also affected by the floods.

In response, TARURA undertook immediate measures, including the removal of debris, mud, and logs from the affected areas, reopening the 19.7 kilometers of roads in Katesh Town, and clearing mud from the homes of 61 families.

TARURA was also given the responsibility of constructing a 13.5-kilometer gravel road in Walet, where new homes were built for those displaced by the floods.

“We thank President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan for enabling the flood victims to secure new homes,” said Engineer Mlia.

Over the past three years, TARURA in Hanang has seen its budget increase significantly, from TZS 800 million to TZS 2.3 billion. This funding boost has enabled the construction of all-weather roads, improving year-round accessibility.

The district is also set to benefit from the installation of 27 streetlights in Katesh Town, providing residents with increased security and the ability to conduct economic activities even after dark.

The people of Hanang have expressed deep gratitude for the government’s efforts in restoring vital infrastructure and improving their livelihoods after the devastating floods.

Rogat Petro, a local resident, acknowledged the swift actions taken by the Sixth Phase Government, noting that the district has benefited from various developments, particularly in areas previously underserved.

“We thank the President for her quick response during the floods. The restoration of services and communication has allowed us to return to our daily activities,” he said.

Petro also emphasized the community's commitment to preserving the government’s investments in their district, stating that the people of Hanang value the infrastructure improvements and are united in safeguarding these developments for future generations.

The restoration of these roads is not only a critical step in rebuilding the area but also a reflection of the government's commitment to supporting the economic resilience and well-being of rural communities affected by natural disasters.
