The Archbishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) Northern Diocese, Dr. Fredrick Shoo, has urged young people nationwide to embrace self-awareness, integrity, and active participation in elections to play a meaningful role in shaping the nation’s future.
Speaking at the opening of a national youth workshop held at in Arusha, Dr. Shoo emphasized the vital role of youth in nation-building, calling on them to move beyond passivity and complaints.
He highlighted the need for patriotism and ethical leadership among the younger generation, stressing that their involvement in decision-making processes and tackling societal challenges is crucial for progress.
The workshop, which brought together youth from different regions of mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, focused on leadership, peacebuilding, and the role of faith in fostering social responsibility.
Organized by the Interfaith Peace Committee, the event aimed to equip participants with the tools to lead and advocate for positive change within their communities.
Sheikh Hamis Mataka, Chairperson of the National Executive Council of the Muslim Council of Tanzania (BAKWATA), echoed the call for moral values and peaceful coexistence.
He noted that the country faces challenges stemming from declining moral standards among young people, urging them to become ethical, proactive contributors to national development.
Bishop Nelson Kisare of the Mennonite Church in Tanzania, also Chairperson of the Interfaith Peace Committee on Economic Justice and Ethical Creation, called on youth to recognize their responsibilities in addressing societal and environmental challenges, such as climate change.
He stressed that self-aware and ethical young people are the foundation for fostering peace and development in any nation.
One of the participants, Yusuph Mbaruku from Pemba, expressed gratitude to the organizers for providing an opportunity to learn about self-awareness, patriotism, and the importance of ethical conduct.
He commended the initiative for empowering youth to take a more active role in shaping the future of the nation.
The workshop reflects ongoing efforts by interfaith organizations to nurture a generation of responsible, ethical leaders committed to creating a peaceful and prosperous society.
