Airtel Tanzania has taken a significant step toward advancing digital learning by donating internet routers to 50 public schools in Rombo, Kilimanjaro.
The initiative forms part of the telecom giant’s flagship program, Airtel SMARTWASOMI, in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The program aims to bridge the digital divide and empower public schools with access to online educational resources.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Airtel Tanzania’s Regional Business Manager, Stephen Akyoo, praised the Tanzanian government for fostering public-private partnerships to enhance education.
“These 50 Outdoor Unit (ODU) routers will transform digital education in the region, providing teachers and students with greater access to online learning materials. The Airtel SMARTWASOMI initiative ensures that educators and learners are equipped with digital tools to navigate today’s dynamic educational landscape,” said Mr. Akyoo.
Representing the Regional Education Office, Teacher Adam Ally expressed gratitude for Airtel’s commitment to improving the education sector. He underscored the importance of partnerships in tackling challenges in education.
“This internet service will dramatically improve the learning environment in Rombo district. Students will benefit from better access to academic resources, while teachers will gain modern tools and innovative methods to deliver impactful lessons,” said Teacher Ally.
Launched on May 31, 2024, the Airtel SMARTWASOMI initiative aims to digitize teaching and learning platforms in 3,000 public schools across Tanzania within five years. The deployment of 50 routers in Rombo is a step toward achieving this ambitious goal, allowing students to access digital learning materials more effectively and improving their academic performance.
The program also benefits teachers by providing resources to adopt new teaching methods, ensuring they stay ahead in a rapidly evolving educational environment. Airtel supports this effort with fast 4G and 5G data services, accessible through devices like Airtel 5G routers, pocket Mi-Fi units, Outdoor Unit Routers, and smartphones.
Students welcomed the initiative, recognizing its potential to revolutionize their learning experience. Diana Daniel, a student at Mashati Secondary School, highlighted how internet access will alleviate traditional learning challenges.
“With these internet tools, we won’t struggle with paper-based learning or searching for books. I thank Airtel for this invaluable support,” Diana said.
Headmistress Vaileth Magesa of Kwalakamu Secondary School emphasized the positive impact on teachers’ work.
“This is a game-changer for both teachers and students. The internet will simplify lesson preparation and improve access to up-to-date educational materials, ultimately enhancing academic outcomes,” she said.
Airtel’s efforts are part of a broader mission to integrate technology into Tanzania’s education system. By connecting schools with digital tools, the company aims to inspire innovation, drive excellence, and prepare students and teachers for success in an increasingly digital world.
As Airtel continues to expand its programs, the benefits are expected to extend beyond classrooms, fostering a culture of innovation and academic excellence across Tanzania.
