A Tanzanian delegation, led by Eng. Felchesmi Mramba, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, and Angellah Kairuki, Presidential Advisor on Clean Cooking Energy and Community Development, held discussions with leaders from Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) during the COP29 climate conference in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The meeting focused on advancing clean cooking energy strategies in Tanzania and exploring collaborative opportunities with SEforALL to drive the clean cooking energy agenda forward.

During the talks, Eng. Mramba highlighted Tanzania’s target for 80% of households to use clean cooking energy by 2034.

He explained that the government is pursuing this goal by expanding rural electrification projects and preparing a program to distribute electric cookstoves to encourage the use of electricity as a clean cooking energy source.

He added that the government is committed to partnering with SEforALL to enhance clean cooking energy initiatives in schools with access to electricity and to educate students on the importance of clean cooking energy from a young age.

Ms.Kairuki emphasized that Tanzania, through SEforALL’s strong partnerships with various stakeholders, would continue learning from international best practices to further the nation’s clean cooking goals.

SEforALL CEO Ms. Damilola Ogunbiyi voiced her organization’s readiness to support Tanzania by promoting electricity as a clean cooking energy source, starting with institutions and households that already have access to electricity.

She also announced that SEforALL is organizing an International Forum on Sustainable Energy in March 2025 in Barbados, where President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan has been invited to deliver a keynote address, recognizing her leadership in clean cooking energy.

The Ministry of Energy, in collaboration with the Office of the Vice President and the African Union, will also host a side event on November 12, 2024, titled “Addressing Clean Cooking Energy Challenges in Africa: A Call for African Leaders.”

The event will be led by Vice President Dr. Philip Mpango and aims to address Africa’s unique challenges and opportunities in clean cooking.

Tanzania has positioned itself as a leader in clean cooking efforts in Africa, promoting integrated solutions to address energy and environmental issues.

In 2023, President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan launched the African Women for Clean Cooking Support Program (AWCCSP) at the COP28 conference. This initiative aims to raise awareness, foster partnerships, and improve access to funding to accelerate clean cooking adoption.

On May 8, 2024, President Samia also inaugurated Tanzania’s national clean cooking energy strategy, outlining a roadmap to expand access to sustainable cooking solutions.

At COP29, Tanzania’s Ministry of Energy, alongside its agencies TANESCO, REA, and TPDC, will participate in Energy Day, presenting energy projects and programs that aim to mitigate climate change impacts.

The event will provide an opportunity for stakeholders to engage, explore partnerships, and deepen their understanding of Tanzania’s ongoing efforts in the energy and climate sectors.
