Geita. Leaders and citizens alike have been gathering in large numbers to learn about mineral identification and testing techniques, with particular interest in using the XRF machine at the Mineral Commission’s booth during the 7th Mining Technology and Investment Exhibition, held at Bombambili Grounds in Geita.
The XRF machine, designed to analyze metal content through X-ray radiation, provides instant feedback by displaying the percentage composition of different minerals within a sample.
Engineer Edith Lewis, a lab officer from the Mineral Commission, explained to the audience that minerals typically occur in mixed forms within rocks.
She emphasized the importance of accurate testing, especially for those dealing in precious metals like gold, to avoid being defrauded by fake products.
"For those buying gold and worrying about counterfeit items, this booth offers a chance to learn how to distinguish various minerals. You can even test your gold or copper jewelry here," said Edith.
She also advised the public to take advantage of the laboratory services at the Mineral Commission in Dar es Salaam, located at Msasani-TIRDO Complex, for more detailed testing.
"This machine works by scanning a sample and displaying its mineral content. For example, if you're testing gold, the machine might show that it's 11% gold and 89% copper. This way, you’ll know immediately whether the item is genuine," she explained.
She also introduced another machine capable of analyzing rock samples, offering detailed results of all elements present, along with their exact percentages. For instance, if a sample contains copper, the machine will display "Cu....%" or "Fe" for iron and "Au" for gold.
Engineer Edith encouraged attendees of the Geita exhibition to visit the booth, where they could explore various gemstones and learn about opportunities in the mining sector.
This year’s exhibition theme, "Using the Right Technology and Clean Energy in the Mining Sector for Sustainable Development," has attracted a wide range of stakeholders.
Notable leaders who visited the Mineral Commission booth include the Deputy Minister for Home Affairs, Daniel Sillo, Geita Town MP and member of the Parliamentary Energy and Minerals Committee, Constantine Kanyasu.
Other high-profile visitors included Geita Regional Commissioner Martine Shigela, Commissioner of Minerals Dr. Abdulrahman Mwanga, Blue Coast Director Ignas Inyasi, STAMICO CEO Dr. Venance Mwasse, Mbogwe District Executive Secretary Dr. Jacob Julius, and Geita UVCCM Chairman Manjale Magambo.
