The National Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) has been urged to provide public education on the Personal Data Protection Law to enhance awareness within the community.
The request was made today, October 9, 2024, in Dar es Salaam, during a two-day workshop aimed at increasing understanding of the Personal Data Protection Law. The training, held from October 8-9, 2024, brought together various stakeholders from within and outside the country.
In the workshop, Miriam Wanjiru, a Project Officer from The Paradigm Initiative, emphasized the importance of the commission being independent and free from government interference to carry out its duties effectively for the nation's benefit.
She also noted that it is the government's responsibility to educate citizens on the law to protect their privacy.
"In other countries I have visited, I have seen organizations training people from the grassroots level, building a deep understanding of the Personal Data Protection Law, and the response has been satisfactory," she said.
Meanwhile, Martina Kabisama, National Coordinator for the Southern Africa Human Rights NGO Network (SAHRiNGON), highlighted the critical need for people to understand the importance of data protection, particularly in today’s globalized world. She added that after the workshop, she plans to meet with civil society organizations to assess their understanding of personal data protection and find ways to reach the general public.
Kabisama also expressed confidence that people will gain a deeper understanding of the law and will be able to use it when they notice things are not being handled
properly.
