CSI Energy
Group, a network of companies providing energy solutions in Africa, has
released its first Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) report dubbed “The First Stitch.”
The report
shows the company’s dedication to sustainable development in Africa’s energy
sector. It celebrates Africa’s cultural heritage and supports a fair and just
energy transition.
“The First
Stitch” focuses on key areas like health and safety, quality management, energy
sustainability, job creation, and gender equality.
Natacha Emilien, deputy CEO of CSI Energy Group, said, “The First Stitch is a story of change that blends traditional wisdom with modern innovation.”
“It
marks the start of a new era where every action contributes to a greener and
more inclusive Africa,”
One major
project highlighted is the Kinyerezi 1 Extension in Tanzania, a natural
gas-fired power plant. This project reduced Tanzania’s reliance on hydropower,
saved the country about $500 million in fuel costs, and met the electricity
needs of over one million people in 2017.
The report
aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It shows
the company’s commitment to human rights, labor standards, environmental care,
and anti-corruption principles.
The
company values transparency and accountability. “By reporting on our ESG
activities, we aim to drive improvement, build trust with stakeholders, and
create positive impacts,” said Emilien.
The report
sets clear goals, including ensuring that 40% of management positions are held
by women and achieving equal pay by 2025. CSI Energy Group is committed to
clean energy and has vowed not to start new projects that depend on oil,
diesel, or coal.
The
company also promotes decent work by creating safe jobs, with 90% of roles
filled by local workers. It plans to cut its carbon emissions by 10% by 2025.
In 2023,
CSI Energy Group created 545 jobs, including 85 positions for women. It
provided hands-on training to 26 interns and offered long-term jobs to nine of
them. The company also supports local businesses by working with food vendors
and accommodation providers.
Christine
Nafula, Sustainability Manager at CSI Energy Group, said, “We are dedicated to
supporting local communities.” She highlighted the company’s efforts to help
families, provide road safety training, and offer educational resources.
“Our
commitment goes beyond job creation. We aim to be a partner
that cares about local progress,”
