Tabora Region cracks down on unlicensed electricians

By Alfred Zacharia

The Tabora Regional Administrative Secretary (RAS), Dr. John Mboya, has announced a major crackdown on unlicensed electricians in the region.

Speaking at a one-day seminar for electricians on behalf of Tabora Regional Commissioner Paul Matiko Chacha, on September 17, 2024, Dr. Mboya urged all electricians in the region to ensure they obtain proper licenses from the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) as required by Section 8(h) of the Electricity Act, Chapter 131.

"From today, the Tabora region will no longer tolerate unlicensed electricians, commonly referred to as 'vishoka.' I expect that after this seminar, those without licenses will take immediate steps to obtain them in order to operate legally. I strongly encourage all of you to seize this opportunity, as our region has many projects offering great prospects for licensed electricians. Moving forward, unlicensed individuals will not be contracted for any work until they have acquired an EWURA license," Dr. Mboya emphasized.

EWURA Western Zone Manager, Engineer Walter Christopher, explained that the seminar, which attracted over 150 electricians and stakeholders, was designed to build capacity and increase awareness of the legal, regulatory, and procedural frameworks governing electrical system installations.

Key participants in the seminar included representatives from the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA), the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO), the National Housing Corporation (NHC), the Tanzania Building Agency (TBA), and the Tanzania Electrical, Mechanical, and Electronics Services Agency (TEMESA).

Electricians can apply for licenses via the Licensing Online Information System (LOIS) on the EWURA website (www.ewura.go.tz) or download the relevant forms for certification. For assistance, they can also contact EWURA through the toll-free number 0800110030, social media channels, or via email at info@ewura.go.tz.
