Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa, on September 7, 2024, participated in the Maendeleo Bank Marathon 2024 charity run, which began and ended at Greenpark Garden, Oysterbay, in Dar es Salaam.
The marathon’s objective is to raise over Sh 200 million to support children facing various challenges across the country. This year’s theme, "Steps of Hope – Season Two," carried a powerful message of unity and compassion for the most vulnerable members of society.
Maendeleo Bank PLC officially launched the second season of the “Steps of Hope” Marathon on August 2, 2024, at a vibrant event led by the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Prof. Ulingeta Obadia Mbamba.
He was accompanied by Acting Managing Director CPA Peter Tarimo and retired Maendeleo Bank PLC Managing Director Dr. Ibrahim Mwangalaba. The launch was marked by the unveiling of new jerseys, followed by an energetic short race from the Maendeleo Bank PLC Headquarters at Luther House, Posta, to Farasi Grounds, Oysterbay.
The energy and enthusiasm at the event set the tone for the upcoming marathon, which aims to bring joy and support to children facing health challenges, including autism and premature birth.
The marathon is an important initiative to support children with mental health challenges, such as autism at the Mtoni Diakonia Center, and premature babies receiving care at KCMC Referral Hospital. Participants are encouraged to take part not only to enjoy the race but to contribute towards bringing hope and relief to these children.
With every step they take, they are raising both funds and awareness, reminding everyone that the happiness and well-being of these children are in the hands of the marathon's participants. Registration for the marathon is still open at a fee of Sh 35,000, and participants can sign up through the official website.
Beyond the efforts of Maendeleo Bank, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) Eastern and Coastal Diocese has played a significant role in transforming lives, particularly through its infrastructure projects that aim to uplift the community. The church's involvement in the community is multi-faceted, addressing various social issues, from healthcare to education.
One of the most notable projects includes the establishment of hospitals, such as the ELCT Kimara Lutheran Hospital, which has become a symbol of hope for many. This hospital is set to provide essential medical services to underserved populations, especially women and children, helping to improve the quality of life for the most vulnerable.
Rev. Wilbrod Mastai a respected pastor in the diocese, expressed the importance of this work, stating, “Our mission is not only spiritual but also deeply rooted in service to the people. Through our projects, including education and health initiatives, we are working to transform lives and build a future that reflects our values of compassion and care for all.” His words resonate with the ELCT’s broader vision of ensuring that communities have access to the resources and support they need to thrive.
As well, the ELCT Eastern and Coastal Diocese has been pivotal in the development of educational infrastructure, with institutions such as the Dar es Salaam Lutheran School playing a key role in providing quality education. These schools cater to children from different socio-economic backgrounds, ensuring that education is accessible to all, regardless of financial means.
Rev. Dr. Faitha Lugazia, another influential figure in the ELCT, who currently works in Kigali, Rwanda, emphasized the importance of education in breaking the cycle of poverty. “Education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty, and we are committed to ensuring that all children, regardless of their background, have access to this fundamental right,” she remarked.
The church's dedication to social services is further exemplified by its work in creating centers for individuals with disabilities and orphaned children, offering them care, support, and opportunities to lead fulfilling lives. Rev. Frank Kimambo speaking on behalf of the diocese, noted, "We believe in giving everyone a chance at a better life, and our infrastructure projects aim to create spaces where people can find hope and opportunity.” His statement highlights the inclusive nature of the church’s mission, where every individual, regardless of their circumstances, is given the chance to thrive.
The efforts of Maendeleo Bank and the ELCT Eastern and Coastal Diocese reflect a powerful synergy between financial institutions and religious organizations, working hand-in-hand to tackle pressing social issues. Together, they are making a substantial impact in addressing healthcare, education, and social welfare needs, underscoring the importance of collaboration in creating lasting positive change.
As the Maendeleo Bank Marathon approaches, participants are reminded that their involvement goes beyond the race itself. By taking part, they are not only contributing to the well-being of children with autism and premature babies but also supporting the broader efforts of organizations like the ELCT, which have been instrumental in uplifting communities and ensuring sustainable development.
The marathon serves as a symbol of hope, a collective step towards a brighter future for children and communities alike, with institutions like the ELCT Eastern and Coastal Diocese providing a strong foundation for enduring impact.
This year’s Maendeleo Bank Marathon is more than just a charity run; it’s a demonstration of solidarity and commitment to transforming lives. The combination of efforts from Maendeleo Bank and the ELCT exemplifies how different sectors can come together to make a real difference, setting an example of what can be achieved through dedication and collaboration.
