Airtel Tanzania has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming the country’s digital sector with the recent activation of the 2Africa Subsea Cable Landing Station, located in Mbezi, Dar es Salaam.
The telecom company announced that this state-of-the-art submarine cable, which was inaugurated by President Samia Suluhu Hassan in late 2023, will significantly enhance the digital sector by providing superior internet connectivity.
The infrastructure now reaches 3 billion people globally, marking a major leap for Tanzania’s digital ecosystem.
Speaking at the Connect 2 Connect (C2C) 2024 Summit in Arusha, Dr. Adedoyin Adeola, Chief Network Engineering Officer at Airtel Tanzania and a panelist at the summit, described the 45,000-kilometer 2Africa subsea cable as a transformative force in Tanzania’s digital space.
According to Dr. Adeola, cable will play a critical role in advancing the digital sector.
“2Africa will deliver crucial internet infrastructure to Africa’s 1.2 billion people and beyond. Its importance lies in its potential to dramatically enhance digital access across the continent, fostering economic growth, reducing inequality, and spurring technological innovation. Tanzania, now positioned as a digital hub for East Africa, will benefit immensely from this integration into the global digital economy,” Dr. Adeola remarked.
He further highlighted that the 2Africa Submarine Cable landing station will help close the digital divide between urban and rural Tanzania by improving internet access and supporting the growth of online businesses.
This will, in turn, create new revenue streams for the government and improve citizens' lives.
Airtel Tanzania’s Business Director, Joseph Muhere, also emphasized the company's role in facilitating the country’s full transition to a digital economy.
He noted that the cutting-edge infrastructure is aligned with Tanzania’s broader goals of promoting socio-economic growth and fostering digital inclusion.
“The 2Africa submarine cable landing station demonstrates Airtel’s commitment to enhancing the lives of our customers, stakeholders, and communities. This facility will attract both local and international investments and drive innovation. We invite companies to leverage this subsea cable to elevate their capabilities,” said Muhere.
