Tanzania is hosting a
specialized training program to improve the skills of African meteorologists in
using weather radar data.
The World Meteorological
Organization (WMO) and the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) are
organizing the event, which is taking place at Malaika Hall in Mwanza from
August 26 to 30, 2024.
The Minister of
Transport, Hon. Prof. Makame Mnyaa Mbarawa (MP), officially opened the training
which aims to help meteorologists better use radar data to make more accurate
weather forecasts and give timely warnings about severe weather.
This training supports
global efforts, like the United Nations' "Early Warning for All"
initiative, which aims to protect everyone with early warning systems by 2027.
“Tanzania has made
significant investments in modern meteorological equipment, like radar systems.
This has allowed the country to lead in building the skills of its
meteorologists and hosting important training events like this one,” Prof.
Mbarawa noted.
Dr. Ladislaus Chang’a,
Acting Director General of TMA, said that the trainers are well-qualified, with
some having received advanced training in the United States and Finland.
He mentioned that experts
from the University of Dar es Salaam are also involved in the training.
Ms. Eunjin CHOI, a
representative from the WMO Training Office, thanked Tanzania for hosting the
event.
“The partnership with TMA
helps improve weather services in Tanzania and around the world,” she said.
The training includes
participants from 13 African countries, including Kenya, Uganda, Zambia, and
Mozambique.
