Tanzania has received recognition for its contribution to strengthening government monitoring, evaluation and accountability systems across Africa, highlighting the country's role in promoting more effective public sector performance.

The recognition was presented to the Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office responsible for Policy, Parliament, Coordination and Persons with Disabilities, Dr Jim Yonazi, on Monday, November 2, 2026.

The award, presented by the Director of Monitoring and Evaluation, Ms Sakina Mwinyimkuu, followed the outcomes of a working meeting of the TWENDE MBELE network held in Johannesburg, South Africa.

It acknowledges Tanzania’s contribution to improving systems that enable governments to track the implementation of development programmes, measure results and identify weaknesses that require intervention.

Effective monitoring and evaluation are increasingly important in ensuring that government policies and development plans translate into tangible improvements in people's lives, while strengthening accountability in the use of public resources.

In a separate recognition, Dr Yonazi received an award for his leadership in advancing monitoring, evaluation and learning in Tanzania.

Ms Mwinyimkuu presented the award following its announcement during the Fifth Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) Week Conference 2026, held in Arusha.

The awards recognise Tanzania’s institutional contribution and leadership in strengthening monitoring, evaluation and learning as tools for improving public sector performance.

These systems help governments assess whether development programmes are achieving their intended objectives, identify implementation gaps and make evidence-based decisions on how to improve service delivery.

For citizens, effective monitoring and evaluation can help ensure that public projects and programmes deliver the expected results, while giving authorities a stronger basis for addressing shortcomings and improving the quality of public services.
