TRA warns businesses over TIN, tax clearance in tenders

By The Respondents Reporter

Businesses seeking to participate in public tenders or operate through digital platforms have been reminded to display valid tax compliance documents as the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) moves to strengthen compliance among traders.

In a public notice issued on October 1, 2026, TRA said businesses engaged in trade, including those seeking opportunities through public procurement, are required to have a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) in accordance with the law.

The authority said the requirement is provided for under Section 22 of the Tax Administration Act, 2015, as amended, and Regulation 58 of the Tax Administration (General) Regulations, 2016.

According to TRA, businesses participating in public tenders or conducting business through digital platforms must prominently display either a TIN certificate or a Tax Clearance Certificate, depending on the applicable requirement.

The move places greater responsibility on businesses to ensure their tax records are in order when seeking government contracts or conducting transactions through digital channels.

TRA said the documents should be displayed on the accounts or platforms used by businesses to conduct their activities, making it easier to verify their tax status.

The authority advised businesses that need clarification to visit their nearest TRA office or contact its taxpayer service centre through toll-free numbers 0800 750075 and 0800 780078.

They can also seek assistance through huduma@tra.go.tz.

The notice is part of TRA's efforts to improve tax compliance and ensure businesses meet statutory obligations as they participate in the formal economy.
