VETA targets mining jobs for skilled youth

Young Tanzanians seeking jobs in the mining industry are set to benefit from new specialised vocational training programmes designed to meet the sector’s growing demand for skilled machinery operators.

The Vocational Education and Training Authority (VETA) said it has developed six new curricula in collaboration with the Tanzania Mining Services Providers Association, focusing on specialised equipment used in mining operations.

The programmes cover Bogie Operation, Jumbo Operation, Solo Operation, Cubex Operation, Charge Up Operation, and Lifting and Rigging.

VETA Curriculum Development Officer Engineer Audiface Tarimo said the programmes were designed to give young people practical skills that match the needs of mining companies and service providers.

Speaking on September 29, 2026, during the ninth National Mining Technology Exhibition in Geita, Mr Tarimo said the training would be offered at VETA Moshi.

“We are preparing young people with skills that respond to the actual needs of the mining sector, particularly in machinery operation,” he said.

The initiative is expected to widen access to specialised technical skills at a time when mining companies require workers capable of operating and handling increasingly sophisticated equipment.

VETA has also begun strengthening its pool of trainers to support the new programmes. Some of its instructors have received specialised training in Finland and are now passing the knowledge on to other VETA trainers in Tanzania.

Mr Tarimo said the approach would enable VETA to train more instructors and, in turn, reach more young people seeking opportunities in the mining industry.

The training initiative is part of efforts to ensure Tanzanians have the technical skills needed to participate in the mining economy rather than leaving specialised employment opportunities to workers from outside the country.

For young people, the programmes could provide a pathway into specialised occupations that require practical technical skills, particularly in the operation, lifting and handling of heavy mining equipment.
