The Ministry of Health has intensified preparations for a possible Ebola outbreak by strengthening the capacity of health workers in Dodoma, Coast and Geita regions to detect, prevent and respond to the disease.
The preparedness drive is being implemented by the ministry’s Health Services Quality Assurance Unit and Emergency and Disaster Management Unit in collaboration with CDC Tanzania and Amref Health Africa Tanzania through the Global Health Security Agenda project.
As part of the initiative, health workers were trained on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at Zuzu Health Centre in Dodoma City on infection prevention and control measures, including the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
The training covered procedures for safely putting on and removing protective equipment, screening patients for suspected infections and proper handwashing techniques to minimise the risk of disease transmission.
Health workers were also trained on how to prepare designated areas for the isolation and treatment of patients should Ebola or another high-risk infectious disease be detected in the country.
The exercise is being accompanied by assessments of health facilities to determine their level of preparedness and identify areas requiring improvement.
A team of health experts has been assessing preparedness at Dodoma City Hospital as well as health facilities under Bahi District Council.
The measures come as Tanzania continues to strengthen its surveillance and response systems amid the threat posed by infectious diseases that can spread rapidly across borders.
The ministry said Tanzania has so far recorded no confirmed case of Ebola, but stressed the importance of maintaining a high level of preparedness to respond promptly should a case be detected.
Ebola is a severe viral disease that can cause serious illness and death, with infection prevention, early detection and rapid response being critical to containing outbreaks.
The ministry is continuing to strengthen preparedness for Ebola alongside measures targeting other epidemic-prone and emerging infectious diseases.
