The High Commissioner of the Republic of South Africa to Tanzania, together with a number of stakeholders, has visited Segerea Prison in Dar es Salaam, where various forms of support were handed over as part of efforts to continue commemorating Nelson Mandela International Day.
The visit brought together representatives from the diplomatic community and other stakeholders in an initiative aimed at translating the values associated with the late Nelson Mandela into practical acts of service, solidarity and respect for human dignity.
The event was graced by Ambassador Said Shaib Mussa, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, who served as the Guest of Honour.
Speaking during the occasion, Ambassador Mussa highlighted the importance of preserving the values of human dignity, compassion, solidarity, equality and service to humanity, noting that the legacy of Nelson Mandela continues to provide an important platform for reflection and meaningful action.
He also underscored the importance of supporting initiatives that promote human dignity and rehabilitation, particularly within correctional institutions, while encouraging continued cooperation among governments, diplomatic missions, private-sector actors and other stakeholders in addressing community needs.
The South African High Commissioner to Tanzania also addressed the gathering, emphasizing the significance of continuing to honour Mandela's legacy through concrete acts of service and engagement with communities.
The assistance provided to Segerea Prison was made possible through contributions and collaboration among various stakeholders who joined the initiative as part of the ongoing Mandela Day commemorations.
The visit also provided an opportunity to reflect on the broader principles of rehabilitation, reintegration and human dignity, recognizing that correctional facilities are not only places where sentences are served, but also environments where individuals can be supported in preparing for a constructive return to society.
Nelson Mandela's life remains closely associated with the values of human dignity, equality, reconciliation, peace and service to humanity. His years of imprisonment and subsequent leadership of South Africa continue to form an important part of the country's history and its global legacy.
