The government has urged public institutions to invest in ergonomic office furniture to help reduce back and spinal problems among workers who spend long hours at their desks.
Minister of State in the President’s Office, Public Service Management and Good Governance, Ridhiwani Kikwete, said institutions should treat employees’ health as an important consideration when procuring office furniture, particularly chairs that provide adequate back support.
The minister said the use of ergonomic chairs could help create healthier working environments for public servants and support their efficiency in delivering services.
“Institutions should use chairs that are friendly to workers, especially ergonomic chairs that protect their health,” Mr Kikwete said on Monday, September 14, 2026.
He was speaking in Chalinze, Coast Region, where he handed over furniture to the newly inaugurated Msata Divisional Office.
The furniture, donated by Imara Endelevu Company Limited, included a filing cabinet, two desks, three chairs and a stool. The company, based at Pongwe Msungura, is engaged in aggregate production.
Mr Kikwete, who is also the Chalinze MP, said improving office facilities was important in creating a conducive working environment and enabling public servants to perform their duties effectively.
He also presented certificates of appreciation to people who contributed to the construction and furnishing of the office.
The intervention comes as public institutions continue to improve working environments, with office facilities playing a role in staff welfare as well as the quality and efficiency of services delivered to citizens.
Mr Kikwete said the donated furniture would strengthen the capacity of staff at the Msata office by providing them with better facilities to carry out their daily responsibilities.
