Yanga have started the new season on a winning note after edging arch-rivals Simba 1-0 to lift the Community Shield at New Amaan Complex in Zanzibar.
Albert Kagwanda scored the only goal of the closely contested final in the 31st minute, giving Yanga a lead they managed to protect until the final whistle.
Kagwanda’s strike came after Yanga capitalised on an opportunity in the first half, putting Simba under pressure as the Jangwani-based side looked to secure the season’s first piece of silverware.
Simba went into the break trailing 1-0 and returned for the second half with a clear intention to level the score.
The Reds created several opportunities as they pushed for an equaliser, but their finishing let them down at crucial moments.
Yanga, meanwhile, remained organised and also looked for opportunities to extend their lead, although they were unable to add to Kagwanda’s goal.
The second half ended without further goals, leaving Yanga with a narrow advantage after 90 minutes.
The referee added five minutes of stoppage time, but Simba could not find the breakthrough they needed as Yanga held on to secure the Community Shield.
The victory gives Yanga an early boost ahead of the new season, while Simba will be left to reflect on their missed chances after failing to turn their opportunities into goals.
